Student Assistant, Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America of Harvard Radcliffe Institute, (Cambridge, MA)

Description

As part of the published materials team, the student assistant will help department staff provide access to the library’s newly received materials by adding bibliographic and holdings records for books and serials to the HOLLIS catalog using the Alma library management system. The assistant will also physically process materials in accordance with best practices to prepare the items both for use by researchers and for long-term preservation. The assistant will participate in department projects such as searching the library system for duplication of potential new acquisitions, annual serials collection inventory and database updates, and other projects essential to the department’s management of published materials.

Qualifications

  • Ability to pay attention to detail and work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Familiarity with online catalogs and MARC records
  • Ability to handle fragile materials with care
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Students pursuing a master’s degree in LIS are encouraged to apply
  • Current enrollment in or completion of “Information Organization” course or other library cataloging course strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with OCLC’s Worldcat database and Connexion cataloging software preferred
  • Interest in women’s and gender studies and history is helpful but not required

Hours and Compensation

Schedule: 14 hours per week. Schedule is negotiable, but must fall within the range of Monday- Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm; ideally the student assistant will work two 7-hour days, but that is not a requirement.

Pay: $21.00/hour
