Librarian and Archivist, Cape Ann Museum, (Gloucester, MA)

Reporting to the Chief Curator and part of the Collections department within the Museum, the Librarian/Archivist will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Library/Archives, including collection care, organization and development, reference, access, outreach, arrangement, and description. The Librarian/Archivist will work across departments, in collaboration with the Museum Director, Collections department, Education and Community Engagement colleagues, and all other CAM Staff, while also staffing the Museum’s Collections Committee.

Responsibilities

Ensure the dynamic stewardship of the Library/Archives collections across two campuses: the
CAM Green, which houses the James Center as the primary repository for the care and
processing of the Collections, and the Downtown Campus as the initial focal point for visitors
and researchers alike.

  • Oversee the preservation and safekeeping of the Library/Archives collections, including handling, storage, conservation, and security.
  • Maintaining and enhancing Quartex, the Library & Archives’ Digital Collections and catalog in collaboration with the Photo Archivist, respond to daily research inquiries (both in-house and external), and manage all rights and reproduction requests related to the Library/Archives collections, including requests made of the Museum’s growing photography holdings.
  • Engage CAM colleagues, volunteers, and the general public in the Library/Archives resources and services.
  • Identify opportunities for collections development by working in concert with the Museum’s Development Office to research grant possibilities, facilitate donor relations on request, and identify possible collection acquisition opportunities with the Museum’s Collections staff and the Collections Committee.
  • Conduct bi-annual surveys of the Library/Archives collections to ensure their ongoing stewardship.
  • Partner closely with all other Museum departments to ensure full integration of Library/Archives and work closely with special exhibitions and public programming to expand knowledge and access to the Library/Archives collections.
  • Assist in other duties as assigned by the Museum’s Director to support the operations and activities of the Museum.
  • Recruit and supervise interns, docents, and volunteers as needed.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in library information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent
with advanced coursework in archival management.

  • 3 years of professional work experience in archives and special collections required.
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in museum-based archives, including the best practice procedures for managing, maintaining, and preserving archival records and collections.
  • Proficiency in both Mac/PC and MS Office, Google Apps, and archival information systems such as Extensis Portfolio, FileMaker Pro, EmbARK, Quartex, or related collections management software.
  • Poise, maturity, flexibility, and aptitude to work as a collaborative team player with Board members, colleagues, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Appreciation of the Museum’s mission and ability to be an effective spokesperson.
  • Knowledge of Cape Ann history and art preferred.
  • Ability to work some nights, early mornings, and weekends as events and meetings require.
  • Capability to lift up to 40 lbs.
