Fall 2025 Digitization Intern, De Gruyter Brill, (Boston, MA)

This fall, Paradigm Publishing Services will digitize previously out-of-print titles a for a number of US University Presses with catalogs going back to the early twentieth century. We are seeking a dedicated archivist intern to assist in these projects. This position will be in-person, based out of the Boston office at 121 High Street.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Accepting deliveries of archive books to the office
  • Examining the state of the books to determine if they are fit for scanning
  • Scanning the books using a destructive and non-destructive scanner
  • Capturing and maintaining basic bibliographic metadata in a database
  • Enhancing metadata, if applicable using AI tools
  • Other administrative duties as required

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have the following qualifications:

  • Interest in cataloging and library systems
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Office, SharePoint, if possible Jira or other project management tools)
  • Comfortable using databases or spreadsheets for data entry
  • Experience with or willingness to learn about metadata creation and cataloging standards
  • Attention to detail, especially when handling fragile materials and capturing data
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and complete complex projects
  • Reliability when handling historical or sensitive materials
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills

Hours and Compensation

This position can be taken for LIS 512 credit (pending eligibility) and/or can be a paid position. There are 4 open positions for this role, consisting of approximately 20 hours per week. The earliest start date for this position is September 1 and the position will run until mid-December with the possibility of extension.
