The Abbott Library (Sunapee, NH) is looking for a dynamic and creative individual to be our Youth Services Librarian. Due to an internal promotion, we seek an enthusiastic innovator who is motivated to instill a life-long love of libraries in our youngest patrons. This is a full-time role that reports to the Library Director.

The Abbott Library is a welcoming and professional environment that enjoys tremendous support from its community. Abbott serves a community of approximately 3400 year-round residents and a large seasonal community. The building is new as of 2014, and offers an expansive children’s area with plenty of activities and seating, a large Activities Room with cubbies and space for a wide variety of programming, and a separate teen space.

Responsibilities

Duties specific to the position include:

  • Development, maintenance and cataloging of the youth, teen and parenting collections, including materials budget management;
  • Planning programming for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary, middle, and high school students and their families, including seasonal reading programs, and presentations;
  • Readers’ advisory for youth, parents and caregivers;
  • Initiating and engaging in frequent community outreach.

General library duties will include assisting patrons, registering new patrons, data entry and special projects. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of youth literature and programming, enjoy working with children, have excellent technology skills, and be personable, cheerful, and professional.

Qualifications

Professional Experience

  1. Knowledge of youth literature including bibliographic tools and sources pertaining to said literature and work.
  2. Knowledge of the techniques of youth programming.
  3. Interest in library work with youth including teens.
  4. Willingness and ability to develop strong interactive community relationships.
  5. Willingness and ability to assume responsibility and carry out assignments independently.
  6. Good oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to search the Internet and other electronic databases.
  7. Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and practices of library operation.
  8. Knowledge of the theories, objectives, principles and practices of public administration as applied to a public library.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, officials of other agencies and the general public.
  10. Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written communications.
  11. Ability to assess reader interest.
  12. Ability to offer patrons basic and intermediate help with technology devices, software and apps. 
  13. Ability to use audio-visual technology, office equipment and library systems.
  14. Ability to perform routine work well; to follow instructions and to accept responsibility.
  15. Ability to arrange books alphabetically and numerically.
  16. Neat, clean, friendly, can-do attitude with other staff and patrons, and willingness to accommodate all patrons.
  17. Commitment to expand skills and knowledge through continuing education courses and workshops.
  18. Sufficient general knowledge of everyday library procedures to permit running the library in the Director and Assistant Director’s absence.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and library experience may be considered.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Valid driver’s license or access to public transportation.

Hours and Compensation

This is a full time role.
