Youth Services Librarian, Hanson Public Library, (Hanson, MA)

Job Description

The Youth Services Librarian is a professional position responsible for leadership and management of the Hanson Public Library’s services to children and young adults.

Position Duties

  • Plans and implements programs and services that respond to the educational, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of children and young adults
  • Develops and participates in public relations and publicity efforts for youth activities and services through press releases, promotional materials, displays, speaking engagements, etc.
  • Creates posts for the Library’s website, social media accounts, and other related platforms
  • Coordinates with other Library staff and partners with the Library Foundation, Library Friends, community organizations, town departments, schools, day care facilities, and local businesses to promote the Library and its services
  • Manages assigned areas of the collection, including selection, purchase, and withdrawal of materials
  • Stays informed of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in youth services and participates in professional development opportunities to enhance relevant library skills
  • Answers reference questions from children and young adults in person, over the phone, and through email
  • Assists children and young adults with selecting reading material and using the Library, print and online resources, the Internet, mobile apps, computer software, and a wide variety of technologies, including computers, printers, photocopiers, and mobile devices
  • Staffs the circulation desk and performs circulation duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program preferred
  • Minimum of two years of experience in professional public library work
  • Experience working with children and teens in a learning or educational setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers and technology required
  • Familiarity with SirsiDynix Workflows preferred
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends

Hours & Compensation

  • 20 hours weekly with possible evening and Saturday hours
  • Starting salary: $27.16 per hour; $29.88 per hour with MLS degree
