Job Description
The Archives Department of the Archdiocese of Boston is currently looking for a part-time Assistant Archivist to join its team. This position is for up to 18 hours per week for an in-person role at the Pastoral Center, 66 Brooks Drive, Braintree, MA. The individual who fills this position will be expected to share a wide array of responsibilities with our small team.
This position requires periodically visiting external offices, parishes, and schools to assess records management practices and/or collect records for transfer to the archive. A personal vehicle is required, compensation for mileage will be provided. This position reports to the Director of the Archive and Library and is ideal for an early career archivist or archive student who wants to learn about the various aspects of archives, libraries and records management; is willing to learn new skills on the job; and wants to be part of growing department and collection.
Position Duties
- Fulfill reference requests.
- Process record collections.
- Digitize select materials.
- Create catalog records in ArchivesSpace.
- Enter metadata for digital assets in Preservica.
- Help create and setup exhibits.
Qualifications
- Earned or currently pursuing Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
- Experience in a library, archive, or similar setting preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at one time.
- Must be able to read and transcribe cursive handwriting.
- Must be able to communicate in a professional manner, including in writing and by telephone.
- Must be able to work at a computer for up to eight hours a day.
- Must be able to lift and move boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must be willing to support the mission of the Catholic Church.
Hours & Compensation
- 18 hours per week
