The College of Charleston Libraries seeks a collaborative, student-centered, and innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Librarian to provide engaging library instruction to support student success and the Libraries’ role in the upcoming Intentional AI Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Reporting to the Interim Head of Research & Instruction Services at Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library, the librarian in this position will teach credit-bearing instruction through the Libraries and First Year Experience Program, provide scheduled instruction across the curriculum, and offer research assistance by appointment and at the point of need. This librarian will also support the College’s curricular goal of preparing students to become ethical and critically literate global citizens with AI proficiencies and collaborate with library and faculty colleagues and other campus partners to integrate AI literacy, information literacy, and digital projects into course curricula. In addition, this librarian will also develop effective and engaging instructional materials, research guides, and online tutorials that support student learning objectives and promote lifelong learning skills. The AI Librarian is a tenure-track member of the library faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Support the College’s curricular goal of preparing students to become ethical and critically literate global citizens with AI proficiencies that include examining the appropriate and ethical use of AI.
  • Design, deliver, and assess credit-bearing courses and scheduled instruction sessions that are student-focused, guided by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and incorporate reflective teaching practices.
  • Provide expert research assistance and point of need instruction to students, faculty, and staff through in-person consultations, virtual services, and outreach initiatives.
  • Participate in library-wide assessment activities to evaluate the effectiveness of library instruction programs and services.
  • Collaborate with library and faculty colleagues and other campus partners to fulfill the College’s Intentional AI QEP.
  • Integrate AI literacy, information literacy, metaliteracy concepts, and library resources into course curricula. Develop instructional materials, research guides, and online tutorials that support student learning objectives and promote lifelong learning skills.
  • Engage and lead in discussions and initiatives related to the ethical and effective use of AI in library services.
  • Undertakes research and/or professional development related to professional and scholarly interests.
  • Serves on library, College, and professional committees, elected and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (M.L.S. or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program
  • Strong public service orientation with an aptitude for providing online and face to face information literacy instruction and research services in an academic library
  • Interest in the intentional, ethical, and effective use of AI in instruction and in library services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and instructional technology skills
  • Commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the research, teaching, service, and professional competency requirements for tenure and promotion advancement
  • Some evening and/or weekend work may be required

Hours and Compensation

This is a full time, tenure track position. Some weekend and evening work may be required.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $72,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
