Join the Dyer Library team at an exciting moment–we just received funding to do some reconfiguring of our youth services area!
As Head of Youth Services, you will perform responsible supervisory, administrative, and professional work in planning, organizing, and coordinating youth services and activities for those aged 0-18 years old, and manage the youth collection development for the library. You’ll supervise youth services staff and guide the strategic direction of the department.
Responsibilities
- Trains, coaches, and supervises youth services staff and volunteers.
- Schedules youth services staff to ensure sufficient and consistent coverage.
- Identifies and provides professional development, training, and continuing education opportunities for direct reports.
- Collects statistics for regular reporting.
- Advocates for youth of all ages in setting organizational priorities.
- Has a vision for the future of youth services in libraries, and works with staff to manage
- change and expectations.
- Conducts regular performance reviews of staff.
- Customer Service (approximately 15%)
- Greets and assists all patrons who enter the Library, establishing a positive first impression.
- Delivers high-quality customer service to patrons, including readers’ advisory, material location assistance, and technology support.
- Creates displays and resource lists for Library or Museum programs.
- Performs all circulation desk tasks.
- Maintains confidentiality of Library records.
- Collects and processes charges for damaged items, out of town cards, or printing fees.
- Aids patrons on the use of the online catalog and other Library and Museum resources.
- Searches catalog and other databases for requested materials; takes purchase and interlibrary loan requests.
- Answers telephone calls.
- Enforces library conduct and borrowing policies when appropriate, informing administration of infractions when necessary.
- Collection Development (approximately 25%)
- Evaluates and purchases physical materials for youth collections, to include all levels of youth fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, periodicals, and media.
- Maintains and weeds collection; makes decisions regarding repair or replacement of damaged items.
- Reviews interlibrary loan requests for possible purchase, manages hold lists for pre ordered books.
- Evaluates and incorporates appropriate technology and digital resources into youth services collection.
- Programming (approximately 25%)
- In conjunction with youth services staff, designs and implements a regular program of daytime and after school programs for youth.
- Develops and implements a program of engagement for middle and high school students.
- With support from the Programming and Outreach Coordinator, designs, schedules, and implements cultural and educational programs for youth.
- Collaborates with other staff to create multidisciplinary programming and educational opportunities for youth.
- Designs and executes the youth summer reading program.
- Builds and maintains connections with community groups and schools to cultivate and create partnerships.
- Conducts off-site library card registration; provides library materials to designated facilities and locations.
- Covers hours on the public service desk performing circulation and/or reference tasks.
- Opens and/or closes the Library and/or Museum in accordance with established procedures.
- Liaise with City staff, community organizations, and local law enforcement to ensure a safe and welcoming library environment.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with community groups, organizations, and professional
- library associations.
- Attends regular staff meetings.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Three to five years of library experience, or experience from a related field including one to three years supervisory experience is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred, but a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) is required and may be considered with transferable experience.
Hours and Compensation
This is a 37.5 hours per week full time position with a salary range of $58,500-$60,567.
