Description
Reporting to the Library Director and collaborating with the full Library Staff, the Library Technician participates in the acquisition and accession process; budget & finance process; provides technical & circulation services; provides statistical insight into catalog usage; serves as a main point of contact for Library users; troubleshoots minor technology issues; and contributes to the cataloging process.
Responsibilities
Acquisitions & Technical Services
- Deliver technical and circulation services with an emphasis on maintaining a high standard of quality for product output.
- Contribute to the accession, acquisition, cataloging, and processing of books/materials, as needed, as a part a team.
- Monitor receipt of periodicals with an eye towards identifying problems with receipt, duplication, or cessation of publication.
- Provide statistical insights into library usage as directed by pulling raw and statistically curated data from the catalog and creating detailed statistical reports.
- Contribute to stack maintenance by ensuring library materials are presentable and orderly.
- Participate in shelf reading and inventory with an emphasis on orderly shelves and ensuring the catalog matches the reality of the shelves.
- Track missing books/materials; check stacks and change status; prepare missing status reports.
- Shelve materials and update displays in collaboration with colleagues.
- Assist with the administration of timely, accurate, and efficient textbook acquisitions, and the textbook buyback program.
- Assist with acquisition invoicing and recordkeeping with an emphasis on accuracy.
- Coordinate library binding of institutional publications.
Budget & Finance
- Assist the Director with oversight of budget, including processing orders of books and materials, and associated approvals.
- Collaborate with the Finance Office to ensure correct and consistent budgetary records.
- Maintain print files and digital records for the Director.
- Facilitate correspondence to assist the Library Director with administrative functions, including gift acknowledgements.
Innovation
- Assist with the maintenance and oversight of the iLab makerspace.
- Assist students, faculty, employees, and community members with projects in that space.
- Contribute to the development of the iLab by making purchase suggestions with a focus on the needs of the curriculum and school community.
- Support the acquisition of iLab supplies and resources by placing approved orders.
- Help maintain a safe, clean environment in the iLab by proactively clearing messes and debris.
- Help train library staff on the use of various iLab resources.
Patron Services
- Serve as a welcoming and professional main point of contact for Library users; provide circulation services and troubleshoot minor technology issues over the phone, through email and other technology- based systems, and in person.
- Develop collaborative partnerships with Library staff, the Deerfield Academy community, and others to proactively identify and recommend resources, strategies and procedures that improve the ability of the Deerfield Academy community to accomplish its goals.
- Monitor usage of the building, making occasional rounds, and serve as a visible presence in the physical spaces. Assist with the appropriate supervision and mentoring of student workers and students.
- Assist with the creation of publicity materials, signage, and digital displays that effectively showcase appropriate Library services, resources, and spaces.
- Stay up-to-date on best practices, professional and technology standards, license, regulatory requirements, and Deerfield Academy policies and procedures to provide consistent and current practices.
- Contribute to a continuous process of assessment to ensure the Library’s success in advancing Deerfield Academy’s evolving goals in light of pedagogical, information, technology, and user preference changes.
- Assist with collection development, materials processing, shelving, special projects, and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required. Associate’s degree preferred.
- 1-3 years’ experience related to duties and responsibilities of the position, preferably in an educational environment. Library experience a plus.
- Strong desire to work with teenage students.
- Ability to instruct and train students and faculty.
- Ability to exercise tact, leadership, and independent judgment.
- Willingness to innovate and adopt new practices and procedures.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work at a very high rate of accuracy.

- The frequent and essential physical activities of this position include: reaching, standing, lifting up to 20 lbs., maintaining manual dexterity, sitting, grasping, ability to move about and traverse 400 feet, pushing and pulling wheeled carts weighing 60 lbs., talking, hearing, and carrying/transferring of library materials. Regular stooping and crouching are required.
- The position requires close visual acuity to view computer screens and equipment, review data and figures, read, visual inspection of library materials and equipment, operate library systems and equipment, and determine the accuracy and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Hours
The typical hours for the Library Technician position during the academic year are:
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday: 1:15pm – 9:45pm
Friday: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
During the summer, the schedule changes to a standard Monday-Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm schedule.
