Archival Digitization Internship, Flux Research, (Cambridge, MA)

Description

Flux Research, Monitoring and Evaluation (Flux R.M.E.) is a values-driven social consultancy focused on social impact assessment. Our mission is to make data meaningful. This summer, we will be working with the Environmental Science and Public Policy Archives (ESPPA) at Harvard’s Lamont Library to support a significant archival digitization effort related to the science and policy of ‘nuclear winter’ (i.e. the theorized global climatic effects of nuclear weapons use). We are seeking an enterprising, self-directed Archival Digitization Intern to work closely with our project lead and Harvard librarians to plan, implement, and manage the digitalization of a substantial archival collection. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in archival science, knowledge management, and/or library & information sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Attend kickoff and planning meetings with Flux and ESPPA staff at Harvard on May 13, 2025.
  • Learn the archive’s structure, cataloging system, and digitization protocols.
  • Plan and implement a document scanning and digitization workflow that respects archive rules and copyright boundaries.
  • Systematically organize, tag, and upload digital files to a shared Google Drive folder.
  • Provide regular updates via email or check-in meetings with the project manager.
  • Track progress, issues, and changes in scope as digitization proceeds.

Recommended Qualifications

  • Organized and independently motivated. Comfortable managing long-term, open-ended projects with evolving scope.
  • Able to learn and navigate academic and institutional protocols.
  • Curious and proactive. You take the initiative in both action and communication. You think ahead.
  • Productive. You value efficiency, but appreciate that efficiency is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself.
  • Experience with digital archiving, metadata tagging, or document scanning.
  • Familiarity with library systems or cloud storage organization (e.g., Google Drive).
  • Background in environmental studies, security studies, global catastrophic risks or related fields.

Hours and Compensation

This is a paid internship. The hourly rate is competitive and will be disclosed during the interview process. We are committed to ensuring a meaningful, hands-on experience.

This internship is part-time and flexible. Interns are encouraged to set their own schedule and pace of work, so long as the work is complete by the end date.

Start Date: May 12 or 13, 2025 (in-person kickoff meetings)
End Date: No later than August 15, 2025
