he Town of Ashland seeks qualified, experienced, and energetic candidates for the position of a Library Intern, 40 hours per week, in the Children’s Department. Preference will be given to MLIS candidates or recent MLIS graduates. We are willing to train the right person who will be an asset to our team, loves kids and families, and who will be a great fit into our community.
This is a temporary position, anticipated to last approximately 3 months after the start date.
Please note that the person in this position is scheduled for two Saturdays a month and one evening a week. TBD by the successful candidate and the Director.
Anticipated Start Date: May 19, 2025 or soon after, following for 3 months or 13 weeks.
Salary: $20 per hour, this is a non-benefitted position
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Director/Director of Youth Services, the Library Intern, Children’s Services is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the summer reading program and special events over the course of the summer. This position will also handle circulation desk functions using an automated circulation system, shelf maintenance, basic library statistics, outreach, and general programming for the children’s room of the Ashland Library. This position is invested in providing excellent service to children and families in and around the Ashland community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Support the Children’s Room operations at the library including but not limited to:
~ Plans, prepares and executes engaging events and activities in line with the summer reading program theme and goals,
~ Takes the lead in researching, developing and implementing an outdoor gardening program using existing outdoor spaces,
~ Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to all patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, systems and services
~ Manages the children’s services desk and adult desk as needed, independently and as part of a team
~ Maintains and updates patron records
~ Performs checkout, check-in, and reserves library materials
~ Supports the AD/DYS in choosing materials for the children’s room collections including relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of the children in the community
~ Plans and implements library programs and services which fulfill the diverse educational, recreational and personal needs of the children and families visiting the library. .
~ Assists with creating and disseminating promotional materials related to the Library and Children’s Room.
~ Adopts a community engagement mindset and develops and maintains effective relationships with the families in the Children’s Room and Library.

~ Ability to interact favorably and to communicate effectively, in speech and/or in writing, with library personnel, members of the community especially children and caregivers, both individually and in group situations

~ Demonstrated ability to connect with children and families
~ Plan and execute programs for children from birth through 12 years of age
~ Provide reader’s advisory
~ Comfort with technology and social media
~ Participate in materials selection for children’s collections.
~ Participate in collection maintenance (weeding/shelf reading)
~ Attend appropriate meetings and workshops
Physical Requirements:
Ability to operate a keyboard and other office equipment. Required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, talk, hear, write, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms, bend, climb, crouch and lift materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job included close vision and distant vision.
Reports to:
Directly to Assistant Director/Director of Youth Services and ultimately the Library Director.
Schedule:
5 days per week
Monday – Thursday (10-6pm)
Friday (9-5pm)
One evening a week (12-8pm)
Alternating 2 Saturdays a month (9-4pm) – work Saturday, take Friday before off

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required. Strong preference for MLIS candidate or recent graduate, with focus in Children’s Services. The priorities for this position are an interest in children’s literacy, the ability to connect with children and their families, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and professionally.
