The David Stick Internship, sponsored by the Friends of the Outer Banks History Center, is a paid summer position with the Outer Banks History Center (OBHC) in Manteo, North Carolina. This is a 10-week, full time graduate internship performing archival work for the OBHC. The internship dates are June 9 through August 15, 2025. The intern will be paid a $4,000 stipend, and dorm-style housing for the duration of the internship will be provided free of charge between June 7 and August 16, 2025, to account for travel dates. Transportation to/from the OHBC is the responsibility of the intern. The David Stick Intern will assist the archivists of the OBHC in completing a variety of projects. Primary duties will consist of the arrangement and description, rehousing, and processing of the OBHC’s unprocessed collections. Other projects will be assigned based on the interests/skills of the successful candidate and may include:
- Assisting with donor relations and new archival accessions.
- Identifying and sleeving historical photographs.
- Cataloging books and published items.
- Transcribing and indexing oral histories.
- Assisting patrons and providing reference services in the OBHC reading room.
- Scanning and digitizing archival materials for patron use.
- Planning and fabricating exhibits using OBHC materials.
- Contributing to OBHC outreach efforts such as social media or offsite programming.
- Assisting OBHC staff members on individual projects.
Eligibility: The position is open to currently enrolled graduate students in archives, library sciences, records management, public history, or a related field. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of coursework towards their graduate degree. Applicants may also apply if they are currently enrolled in their last semester and are due to graduate in Spring 2025 prior to the start of the internship.
Required Qualifications: This position requires attention to detail, curiosity, creativity, and excellent writing and research skills. Prior coursework (at the graduate or undergraduate level) in library sciences, archives and records management, public history, or a related field, OR prior experience working in an archival repository is required. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with members of the public, and prior customer service experience is strongly preferred. The ideal applicant will excel at working both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience arranging and describing archival collections. Substantial coursework in archives and records management, library science, or public history. Knowledge of current library and archival standards and best practices (especially DACS). Experience working with one or more archival content management systems (Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, Archon, AXAEM, etc.). Knowledge of North Carolina’s coastal history and/or familiarity with the Outer Banks region.
About the Outer Banks History Center (OBHC): The OBHC is a regional archival facility administered by the Special Collections Division of the State Archives of North Carolina.
