Substitute Reference Librarians (Part-Time), Fitchburg State University Library (Fitchburg MA)

Job Summary:

The Fitchburg State University Library is seeking 1-4 enthusiastic Substitute Reference Librarians to fill in, on occasion, at the Fitchburg State University Library’s Reference Desk. This position is an intermittent part-time position with variable hours and days (daytime, evening, and weekend coverage needed).

Statement of Duties:

The Substitute Reference Librarian will provide reference and research services to the University community.

Reference/Research Help:

  • Provide in-person, email, online chat, phone, and appointment-based reference services to University students, faculty, staff, and public patrons, including one-to-one reference assistance, technological assistance, and statistical tracking.

Other Duties:

  • Assist with various departmental projects, as possible, including:
  • Assisting liaison librarians with collection development.
  • Assisting librarians in the development, creation, update and management of digital course materials, research guides (Springshare LibGuides, e.g.), and other curriculum content.
  • Train and supervise student workers in reference and research duties.
  • Participating in the development of digital collections for the Archives under the supervision of the Archivist.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Hours & Compensation:

  • This is a substitute librarian position, hours are offered as needed. (Note: up to a maximum of 18 hours per week). Most shifts are scheduled 2 or more weeks in advance with occasional short notice requests.
  • Fall/Spring Semesters shifts will be offered Monday-Friday between 9am and 7pm and Sunday between 1pm and 8pm.The Spring 2025 semester begins January 15th and ends on May 16th. The Fall 2025 semester begins September 4th and ends on December 18th.
  • Limited hours may be available during intersessions (time between semesters) and Summer Semesters.
  • The salary is $26/hour.
  • Benefits: Unpaid time off allowed upon approval of supervisor. Position accrues sick time per University Earned Sick Time policy.

Minimum Requirements:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited program or within 2 courses of completing an MLS.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience providing in-person and virtual reference service, including a broad knowledge of information sources in an academic library.
