Job Summary:
The Town of Chilmark is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Library Director. This person will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operations. This includes staff supervision and scheduling, building and grounds maintenance, budget management, basic computer and technology knowledge, and the preparation of financial and statistical reports. The Director reports to the Board of Library Trustees, and works closely with town employees, community organizations, Friends of the Library, and the Chilmark School.

They will possess an ability to navigate complex situations tactfully and effectively. Attention to detail is essential, as is a collaborative mindset to foster teamwork and partnerships. The ideal candidate will have effective communication skills using various platforms and will be well-organized, flexible, reliable, and capable of adapting to challenges while maintaining a steady and dependable presence.
The Town of Chilmark, on Martha’s Vineyard has a winter population of approximately 1,300 people. In the summer, the population can peak to 7,000. Chilmark is blessed with beautiful beaches, a fishing village, rolling hills and farmland, bordered by ancient stone walls and numerous walking trails through forested preserves. The Town Center at Beetlebung Corner hosts the town hall, fire and EMT stations, the school, library and a community center.
Qualifications:
- While an ALA accredited MLS is preferred, the candidate should have at least a Bachelor’s Degree and at least three years of supervisory experience.
- If the candidate does not hold an MLS, they will be asked to complete the MBLC’s Basic Library Techniques coursework to receive a professional certificate (this is required for municipalities under 10,000).
- Candidate must have at least three years of increasing responsibility in managing and supervising.
- Experience with public library operations would be ideal.
Hours & Compensation:
- Full Time is 38 hours per week (may include occasional weekends).
- The salary range is $97,553-$137,821.
