Responsibilities:
Responsible for providing assistance with Main Library Children’s & Teen circulation, collections and program services including:
- Development of department goals and objectives
- Department policies
- Collection development, maintenance and weeding
- Staff training
- Attendance at professional meetings and workshops to identify new trends, products and services
- Outreach and displays to promote services
- Performs other similar duties pertaining to the functions and goals of the Children’s and Teen Departments
Department Goals and Objectives
- Explain and enforce circulation policies.
- Represent the library in person and on the phone.
- Work with colleagues and Children’s and Teen Senior Librarians to identify and implement short-term and strategic departmental services and collections based on emerging needs, community interest, and library trends.
- Keep abreast of the latest trends in library circulation, and children’s and teen services literature and technology.
Collection Development and Management
- Create timely and relevant displays of new materials.
- Develop collections to meet the needs of children, tweens, and teens.
- Use print and online selection tools to evaluate materials.
- Evaluate condition of collections for ease of use and access.
- Pull database reports to evaluate the relevance of collections.
Program Development
- Develop and plan programs to support the needs of children, tweens and teens, as well as interdepartmental and multi-age programs.
- Oversee busy daily after school teen drop-in program, weekly teen volunteer program and assist with annual Summer Food Service program.
- Supervise children, tweens, and teens who are enrolled in programs.
- Oversee program registrations using current online tools.
- Work with Senior Children’s and Teen Librarians to implement a cohesive and exciting Summer Reading program for children and teens.
Circulation Responsibilities
- Develop thorough understanding and function of library’s ILS soft ware.
- Register library patrons, check materials in and out, place holds and renew items.
- Manage offline circulation and subsequent uploading of records.
- Train staff in all aspects of circulation functions.
- Organize circulation desk for optimum function.
- Use the library’s current scheduling and booking tools to manage program registrations and museum pass reservations.
- Monitor and initiate cash transmittals as needed.
Reader Advisory Services
- Demonstrate familiarity with materials in the Children’s Room and Teen Department collection.
- Offer professional response to inquiries regarding appropriate reading for children and teens at various reading levels.
- Conduct outreach of library services including publicity and displays.
General Duties
- Work with Teen and Children’s Senior Librarians to develop and support all aspects of service.
- Maintain the appropriate business atmosphere in the department. Recognize and respond to emergency situations appropriately.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with fellow staff members, while demonstrating proficient written and oral methods of communication.
Qualifications
Public library experience preferred; experience working with children and/or teens required. Successful candidates will have outstanding public service, organizational, technological and communication skills. Schedule averages 18.75/week and includes evenings and weekend hours.
Starting salary: $28.12/ Hour
