Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Digital Imaging Production Coordinator or designee, the Digital Imaging Production Assistant will function as a production photographer and creator of high-quality digital image files from a wide variety of original source materials to support the growth of a robust digital image collection and the goals of various digital initiatives promulgated throughout the Library.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- Education – A Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university is required. A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited library school is preferred. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the education requirements.
- Experience – Two (2) years of reproduction photography and digital imaging applications and techniques for libraries, museums, archives, or other cultural heritage institutions or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training sufficient to indicate the ability to do the work.
- OSX experience with image capture applications and advanced image editing techniques within Adobe Photoshop.
- Experience in both traditional and digital photographic applications, including studio lighting and filtration techniques for both 3D and flat reproduction work and color management workflows.
- Knowledge of digital imaging techniques and theories and their implications for modern preservation initiatives.
- Knowledge of basic preservation and handling techniques for rare and fragile items.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Teams.
- Ability to execute library policy.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Demonstrates initiative and independent decision-making skills.
- Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
- Ability to think creatively and innovatively.
- Ability to collaborate with library staff, external partners, and resources.
- CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
Responsibilities:
Scope of Responsibility
- Works with the Digital Production Services team to digitally reformat items from the collections of the BPL using the most appropriate hardware devices, software applications, and imaging techniques available in the digital imaging studio.
- Adapts and adheres to strict quality control guidelines, standards, and workflows, assuring the long-term versatility and sustainability of digital image assets.
- Performs individual and batch color and contrast modifications on master image files and their derivatives to produce visually accurate digital surrogates within a carefully color-managed environment.
- Assembles individual image files into larger, high-resolution composites when necessary.
- Participates in routine quality assurance procedures on all image files produced within the BPL lab.
- Monitors and maintains routine calibrations and preference settings on monitors, input devices, other hardware, and software applications.
- Provides basic maintenance and troubleshooting of all capture hardware and software.
- Assures proper naming and placement of image file versions within local and institutional production and storage network structures.
- Other duties as assigned to support the production, upload, and delivery of digital objects.
- Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.
