Learning Commons Evening Supervisor, W. E. B. Du Bois Library, UMass Amherst (Amherst, MA)

Schedule:        During the UMass academic semester: Sun. – Thu. 3:30pm – 11:30pm During winter session (12/23/24 – 1/24/25) and spring break (3/17/25 – 3/21/25) Operating hours – Mon-Fri: 9:30am – 5:30pm

Pay Rate:        $17.50 an hour

Description:

This full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing service activities, including library, information, and technical support, at the Learning Commons Desk in the W. E. B. Du Bois Library, while assisting with routine Library Circulation workflows in Library Access Services as needed.

Supervision received:

  • This position reports to the Manager of Circulation Services.

Supervision exercised:

  • Supervise frontline student staff at the Du Bois Library’s Learning Commons service desk in collaboration with other Access Services staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Train, supervise and assist student employees in providing inclusive and responsive service to patrons at the Learning Commons Desk service point.
  • Respond to patron inquiries in-person, online and by telephone during each shift, refer to appropriate library staff as needed for expert assistance.
  • Provide basic hardware and software technology support. Assist users in the effective use of scanners, readers, printers, copiers, and other hardware devices.  
  • Assist users concerning patron account inquiries, circulating materials, collections, services and policies and lending activities during scheduled shifts in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library to patrons, faculty and staff.
  • Assist users in the use of online discovery systems to identify, locate and request available library materials.
  • Refer complex questions related to loan policy interpretation and patron affiliation to the Manager of Circulation Services or other designated staff members.
  • Assist in maintaining departmental collections (UMass and 5 College holds, Course Reserve items, Interlibrary Loan items) in proper order by shelving/filing or supervising others in shelving/filing and inventorying items.
  • Collaborate with full-time staff across the Access Services department in the performance of these duties.
  • Perform processing of state, alumni and proxy borrower card online applications and create or update patron records in the FOLIO Library System.
  • Clearly communicate emerging issues and notable events during work shift to the department manager and staff on a daily basis.
  • Assist Du Bois Building Operations/Information Desk staff as needed. Exercise considerable independent judgment in supporting service and security activities and monitoring library users in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.  Assist in the event of an emergency evacuation.

Required Qualifications:       

  • Supervisory experience involving training, oversight, and assignment of work in a fast-paced, technology-intensive service setting.
  • Prior experience in a position requiring excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills. Considerable customer service experience and the ability to interact with users (in-person and online) graciously and tactfully.
  • Demonstrated experience with the use of computers and software; ability to adapt to various commonly used mobile devices and applications.  
  • Ability to explain technologies and software applications to others.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, email, chat, and web-based software applications.
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, and technologies used in libraries.  Ability to locate and shelve books by Library of Congress call number order.
  • Ability to lift, shelve and move books, and lift/carry up to 30lbs of books
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
