Description: The Technical Services Librarian oversees and carries out the processing and cataloging of printed monographs, journals, and other library materials through the creation of bibliographic records using appropriate cataloging standards. This position is responsible for inputting data into the electronic catalog and maintaining the library’s integrated library system. This position is also responsible for coordinating the library’s interlibrary loan services, providing system support to all library staff, and being the point of contact for the library’s electronic resources. Additional duties include supporting other library staff with reference appointments, exhibit installation, collection development, and other projects as needed.

Responsibilities:

-Perform original and copy cataloging of the library’s holdings of 16th-21st century printed monographs, as well as adapt and update online records according to guidelines in all subject areas and languages; input details about new materials into the catalog.
-Utilize the rules of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC21, Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM), and Library of Congress standards and subject headings to catalog materials.
-Categorize and classify library materials including books, CDs, films, newspapers, and other documents following library standards and guidelines.
-Physically process library materials to ensure their safety and stability.
-Ensure all materials can be discovered and retrieved by library staff and patrons using standardized methods.
-Organize and process backlogs of materials according to highest priority.
-Operate and maintain library systems software to assist library staff and patrons. Identify and correct errors or reported issues.
-Communicate with library services vendors to complete orders, seek assistance with services, request explanations of procedures and resolve issues and errors.
-Coordinate incoming/outgoing Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests with OCLC Worldshare and through the Rhode Island public library system.
-Interface with the Libraries of Rhode Island (LORI) and Office of Library & Information Services (OLIS) to maintain eligibility and certification for Rhode Island and interstate delivery service.
-Perform in-person and virtual reference services.
-Assist with exhibit installation as needed.
-Contribute to the selection, acquisition and dissemination of new materials for the library, primarily the circulating collection.
-Assist with the planning and running of annual book sales.
-Assist with training circulation staff, as well as overseeing additional library staff projects such as assessment or weeding.
-Effectively create and communicate library procedures and guidelines as needed.
-Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
-MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
-Knowledge of general library practices and procedures.
-Experience cataloging materials in MARC using current standards.
-Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form,

Preferred:
-Experience with original cataloging for rare books.
-Experience working in a special collections environment, knowledge of special collections best practices in book handling, and rare book cataloging.
-Experience providing reference services.
-Knowledge of basic preservation and collection maintenance practices.
-Knowledge of Rhode Island history, colonial history, and early American history.

Salary:

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, $54,000 – $58,000 plus benefits.
