About the Job

The vast archaeological holdings of the Department of Art of Ancient Egypt, Nubia, and the Near East are immeasurably enhanced by the meticulously documented records kept by the Harvard University-Museum of Fine Arts Egyptian Expedition. These include field registers, diaries, photographs, notes, drawings, manuscripts, and correspondence relating to the Expedition’s work in Egypt and northern Sudan. The archives also include records from earlier expeditions such as the American Branch of the Egypt Exploration Society and travelers’ accounts dating back to the early 1800s. These records are an invaluable asset and a worthy area of study in their own right and attract inquiries from scholars worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of Expedition archives including location, archival storage, etc. as needed. Update and correct object records to reflect Expedition records.
  • Research and reply to scholarly inquiries of Expedition records and assist visiting researchers in use of records.
  • Train and supervise interns in digitization and transcription of Expedition records. Proofing and formatting transcriptions for Excel spreadsheets of metadata to upload to the collections database.
  • Continue project to digitize and upload expedition photographs to the collections database and coordinate with Imaging Studio, Visual Archives, and Rights and Licensing regarding these and other image requests.

Qualifications

Graduate study in Egyptology, archaeology, library science, or equivalent work experience

Attention to detail and accuracy a must.

Comfortable reading documents handwritten in cursive

Experience handling fragile archival documents

Excellent clerical, computer, and communication skills.

Knowledge of Excel and Photoshop.

Salary and Schedule

Part-Time Hourly, 21 hours per week

Pay Rate: $28.00 per hour
