GGHMS Research Associate Role

Greater Grove Hall Main Streets is seeking a Research Associate for the Boston Black Women Lead Project, a community effort to document and honor the lives and contributions of Black women throughout Boston’s history, from the colonial era to present day. This contractor role is specifically designated for the completion of Wikipedia articles for the 2023 honorees documented in the Boston Black Women Lead Project. The research associate can expect to contribute to the associated Wikipedia project; as time permits, the research associate will conduct research and draft biographies for 2024 honorees. 

This is a grant-funded, remote position for a period of one year (September 1, 2024 – September 1, 2025). The Research Associate will work in tandem with teams at Greater Grove Hall Main Streets and the Boston Research Center.

Greater Grove Hall Main Streets (GGHMS) is a community development organization in Dorchester, Massachusetts committed to promoting a diverse business district in the Greater Grove Hall area while maintaining the neighborhood’s historical character. 

The Boston Research Center (BRC) is a digital community history and archives lab based in the Northeastern University Library, in partnership with the Boston Public Library and several community partner organizations. The BRC’s mission is to help bring Boston’s deep neighborhood and community histories to light through the creation and use of new technologies.

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct in-depth research on local Black Bostonian women from the colonial period to present-day 
  • Utilize a variety of resources, including databases, libguides, primary source documents to locate, cross-reference, and verify information
  • Compose Wikipedia articles reflecting the rich personal histories of 2023 Boston Black Women Lead honorees
  • Provide progress reports to Boston Research Center team twice a month for the duration of the grant 
  • Communicate effectively on research progress and any challenges encountered 

Qualifications

  • Interest in Women’s Studies, Black Studies, History, or Journalism.
  • Experience with historical Boston research, or writing for the public is preferred 
  • Excellent research and writing abilities
  • Proficient in using a variety of print and digital resources for historical research 
  • Experience with or interest in learning about Wikipedia articles, Wikipedia policies (e.g., editing, neutrality, citation, etc.), or Wikidata 
  • Outstanding organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including comfort with public speaking/presenting
  • Understanding and appreciation for diversity and inclusion, with a demonstrated commitment to incorporating these principles into research practices
