Job Description

The University Library at Nevada State University is seeking applications for the position of University Archivist. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Library, the ideal candidate will become an integral part of a forward-thinking team committed to redefining the role of the university library. This unique opportunity offers the selected candidate the chance to spearhead the development of a university archives program from its inception. With a broad mandate, the University Archivist will have the freedom to explore innovative strategies aimed at maximizing the acquisition, utilization, and impact of archival collections.

Nevada State supports flexible working options as outlined in the university’s Alternative Work Arrangement Policy. Library faculty typically telecommute two days per week.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the management of the University Archives by overseeing the acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and access of university records and related materials, while ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
  • Collaborate with academic departments and administrative units to facilitate the systematic appraisal and transfer of archival records to the University Archives.
  • Oversee the stewardship of both physical and digital archival materials, ensuring their long-term preservation and accessibility.
  • Lead initiatives related to the digitization of archival collections and the creation of comprehensive finding aids using contemporary tools and standards.
  • Serve as the primary resource for research assistance and instruction related to the University Archives.
  • Promote the visibility and use of archival collections through teaching, exhibits, educational programming, and public relations activities, enhancing the educational experience of students and faculty.
  • Provide liaison services to faculty and students in designated subject areas.
  • Proactively improve knowledge and professional practice through training and continuing education.
  • Produce scholarly works, engage actively in service, and fulfill other Nevada State criteria for promotion and tenure.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent by August 30, 2024 with coursework or applied experience in archives and records management.
  • Potential to meet University Library Promotion, Tenure, and Review Expectations.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full-time professional experience in an academic archives or special collections program since obtaining a terminal degree.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of archival practices and familiarity with emerging trends in both analog and digital archives management.
  • Proven experience in acquiring, appraising, arranging, and describing analog, digital, and hybrid archival collections.
  • Expertise in creating both digital and in-person access to archival collections.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management.

Rank, Salary & Benefits

12-month, Assistant professor level position. Tenure-track. Budgeted salary for this position is $71,342. Nevada State University offers excellent benefits, including 17.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, and three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Tuition discounts are available at Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) schools for employees, spouses, domestic partners, and dependents.
