Under the general supervision of the Library Director and Assistant Library Director, this position is responsible for managing the library’s technical services operations including cataloging and database management as well as providing reference and research support to library patrons. This role ensures the efficient organization and accessibility of library resources and delivers high-quality reference services to meet the information needs of the community.
Essential Job Functions:
Technical Services:
- Catalogs library materials according to Dewey Decimal Classification using the network database and other resources. Reclassifies and withdraws materials as required.
- Maintains and updates the library’s catalog and metadata records to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Monitors reports from the library network relating to database maintenance.
- Manages staff and volunteers working in Technical Services, providing training as needed, and oversees the operation of the department.
- Actively study new developments in cataloging, processing and collection maintenance services in libraries.
- Coordinates, with other library staff, in setting policies and procedures particularly relating to ordering, organizing and processing library materials.
- Oversees accurate coordination of incoming shipments, packing lists, and invoices; distributes invoices to appropriate staff for administration of payment.
- Prepares routine reports from integrated library software to assist selectors in collection maintenance and development.
- Routinely functions as daily, evening or weekend Building Supervisor, having first-response responsibility for the staff, facility and public.
Reference:
- Assists and instructs library patrons on use of online databases and research resources.
- Instruct public in use of technology, devices and other equipment.
- Utilize regional and statewide databases and other electronic resources to enhance collection.
- Perform reader’s advisory services for adults.
Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited graduate library school of recognized standing, as well as two to five years’ experience in public library service with relevant experience in technical services.
- Possess a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Good knowledge of professional library principles, methods, techniques and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of current library standards of cataloging, classification and technical processing of materials using integrated library software systems.
- Ability to effectively manage a busy department with a constant flow of work and ever-changing priorities. Accuracy and high rate of output are essential.
- Ability to organize and monitor detailed procedures, consistent with established guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and in a team environment.
- Ability to use new technologies, mobiles devices, and social networking tools to communicate with library customers and colleagues.
- Reference and program planning experience strongly preferred.
- Must work one scheduled evening per week and one Saturday in a 3-week rotation.
