Assistant Director, Hamilton-Wenham Public Library (Hamilton, MA)

The Assistant Director assists the Director in planning, organizing and administering the operations, programs, collections and services of the Library. Additionally they are responsible for staff scheduling and the daily operations of the library in absence of the Director, including but not limited to, staff management, public relations, physical operations, and other issues that may arise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
·         Responsible for daily library staffing; produces weekly staff schedule using online scheduling software; responsible for sick and personal call out coverage arrangements.
·         Assists in acquisition of library materials by monitoring community needs and choosing applicable resources and participates in collection maintenance and evaluation projects.
·         Works with the Director to plan and implement new technology systems and initiatives.
·         Assists the Director in long range planning, goal setting and policy development related to library services, personnel and building; assists with administration and special projects as requested.
·         Directs and participates in hiring and assignment of employees; some responsibilities for training new employees.
·         Acts as volunteer coordinator to recruit, select, schedule, train, supervise, evaluate and determine the use of adult library volunteers.
·         Provides coverage for Reference, Circulation, and Children’s Department as needed and assists department heads in streamlining workflows whenever possible.
·         Provide leadership in helping to achieve the goals of the library including but not limited to: reading professional material, attending workshops and meetings, leading groups and serving as a role model who encourages superior customer service.

Qualifications

·         MLS from ALA accredited institution
·         5 years library experience; minimum 2 years of supervisory experience
·         Knowledge of current and emerging library technology, trends, and practices; and extensive knowledge of library principles
·         Ability to teach and problem solve across a wide range of technologies and software including computers, office equipment, automated library equipment, audiovisual equipment, copiers, printers, scanners, and mobile devices
·         Management, planning and supervisory skills including the ability to function well as part of a team that supports the overall goals of the library
·         Ability to develop and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with others, such as library trustees, library staff, patrons, representatives of community organizations, volunteers, vendors, and town officials
·         Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Salary Notes

35 hours a week (one evening a week, one Saturday every three weeks) – AFSCME Union position
