CIRCULATION & REFERENCE LIBRARIAN – FULL TIME, Clapp Memorial Library, (Belchertown, MA)

Due to a retirement, the Clapp Memorial Library is seeking a Circulation & Reference Librarian to join our team. This position oversees and supervises activities at the public service desk; provides reference and reader’s advisory services; plans, promotes, and executes adult programs including book groups; and participates in collection development for the library. This full time (40 hours/week) position requires some evening and weekend work.
Major duties include: Oversees and supervises activities at the public service desk including scheduling, training, and supervision of circulation staff and volunteers. Performs all circulation desk duties using automated systems. Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; answers the telephone; provides information about library services and use of the online catalog. Collects fees; resolves issues with lost or damaged materials. Observes and follows CWMARS Policies & Best Practice Procedures as pertains to lending items within Library membership network. Follows developments in consortia lending policies and resources. Provides reference services and assists in research projects, such as genealogy research; assists patrons with use of various computer programs and e-resources; provides basic computer and printing troubleshooting, and operates PC and print management systems. Provides referrals and reader’s advisory services. Maintains and updates confidential patron records; produces reports about library usage and statistics. Manages the interlibrary loan program, including processing requests and routing materials to fill holds. Plans, promotes, and executes adult programs, including monthly book discussion groups. Works with the Senior Center and other community-based groups in planning their monthly book groups. Coordinates yearly Adult Summer Reading Program. Responsible for materials selection, collection development, and budget for assigned purchasing areas. Reviews and evaluates materials, using standard review media, popular demand, and patron recommendations. Monitors the condition of library materials for needed repairs or replacement.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of professional library experience required; Master’s degree in library science preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough working knowledge of library principles and procedures. Familiarity with automated circulation systems. Extensive knowledge of current library technology, its application within a regional library, and adaptability to its frequent change. Excellent public relations skills.
