Library Assistant – Reference (18 hours per week), M. G. Parker Memorial Library, (Dracut, MA)

Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Library Assistant Director/Head of Reference, the Library
Assistant is responsible for providing exemplary reference and readers’ advisory services to
library patrons, assisting with print and electronic resource use, as well as other related work, as
required.

  • Interact with and provide assistance to patrons with a wide variety of needs and abilities
  • Perform range of reference and information services in person, by phone, chat and email
    to assist our patrons in using library’s electronic resources and databases and other
    outside resources.
  • Conduct reference interview to determine nature of information requests and level of
    patron understanding, as appropriate.
  • Provide information about library programs, events and services, including museum
    passes, library policies, collections, operating hours and locations within facility.
  • Provide reference materials and readers advisory recommendations to our patrons.
  • Assist patrons with basic computer skills and the use of our printer, photocopier, and
    scanning systems.
  • Record and manage reservations for our study rooms within established guidelines.
  • Record number and type of patron interactions.
  • Other duties as assigned
    Supervision:
    Works under the general direction of the Assistant Director/Head of Reference, according to
    established procedures and departmental policies and standards; duties require independent judgement and initiative.

Qualifications:
Minimum of an Associates’ Degree; two years of library experience or customer service
experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with
libraries or technology preferred. Students in Library Science programs will be considered.

Knowledge, Ability & Skill:

  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of library work.
  • Ability to use available resources to provide library services to library patrons
  • Computer skills; interpersonal skills; written and oral communication skills; planning and
    organizational skills
    Work Environment:
  • Part-time, 18 hours per week, union position with benefits for salary only. Regular
    schedule includes weekend and evening hours.
  • Work is performed in library conditions; work is affected by seasonal fluctuations, such
    as the school calendar and seasonal programs; The employee operates computers, fax,
    scanner, copier, and other library and office equipment
  • The employee has access to confidential patron records, and circulation information
  • Errors could result in delay of service to patrons, monetary loss, or damage to library
    equipment

this job include close vision and distance vision.
