LEAD ARCHIVIST, Winthrop Group, (Winston-Salem, NC)

The Winthrop Group is conducting a personnel search for a full-time Lead Archivist to work in a business archives located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This 18-month, salaried position is scheduled to begin in June 2024. The archivist will be required to pass a background screening and sign the client’s non-disclosure agreement.

The Lead Archivist will serve as the primary point of contact with multiple project stakeholders and manage the day-to-day operations of the on-site archival team, including archival processing, digitization of high-priority items, responding to reference requests, facilitating researcher access to archival material, and supporting various anniversary initiatives.

All work will take place in Winston-Salem at an off-site storage facility and at the company’s headquarters. A Winthrop Digital Archivist based in North Carolina and Senior Archivist in New York City will provide additional project support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Survey archival collections and create a robust inventory for use by stakeholders
  • Develop a processing plan for prioritized archival materials in alignment with project objectives and upcoming anniversary initiatives
  • Facilitate access to collection materials by company staff and authorized, external researchers
  • Conduct research, respond to reference requests and support content development for anniversary-related topics/themes
  • Re-house and process archival materials in accord with professional best practices and local guidelines and procedures
  • Flag confidential records and apply access restrictions in accord with established policies
  • Identify materials for potential digitization
  • Support digitization by third-party vendors, including preparing materials for transport, conducting quality control of digitized files, etc.
  • Select and implement a Collections Management System (CMS) to improve access and collections management
  • Create a plan, in collaboration with Winthrop colleagues, to support the ongoing development of the archives and expansion of its services
  • Provide training and oversight for the Winthrop Archivist
  • Meet with and provide regular updates to designated project liaison
  • Work collaboratively with project stakeholders and Winthrop colleagues

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree with formal training in archival theory and practice
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience working in an archives
  • Minimum of 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Project management experience
  • Demonstrated archival processing experience and application of archival standards and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of non-archivist stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail and experience working with confidential records
  • Knowledge of preservation and conservation standards for archival collections
  • Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently, problem solve, and balance multiple priorities when completing challenging projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently
  • Experience interacting with a variety of stakeholders within a large corporate environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and archival Collections Management Systems
  • Unwavering commitment to privacy and confidentiality
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in business archives or working with corporate records
  • Experience working with digitization vendors
  • Knowledge of and interest in the history of Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Compensation

Salary range: $62,000 – $74,000 commensurate with experience and including strong benefits package (health, dental, and vision) and life insurance. All full-time Winthrop employees receive paid time off and annual funds for professional development.
