Research Project, Brookline Hall of Fame Committee, (Brookline, MA)

We are seeking a librarian major and/ or professional librarian to help us build up a database. We will need some guidance firming up the scope of the project, the projected time needed to complete the project and establishing a suitable project payment.

The long term objective is to build a database of outstanding Brookline High School  individual athletes and teams that were recognized as state champions. Brookline High School was founded in 1843.

The near term objective and the focus of this project is to build a database of Brookline High School individual athletes that were recognized by the Boston Globe and/ or the Boston Herald as All- Scholastics for their sport and compile a list of

Brookline High School teams that won a state championship.

We chose the Boston Globe (founded in 1872) and the Boston Herald (founded in 1846) because both have made these selections for a number of years. I think the Globe started the process for football in 1903 and broadened the categories over the years. I think they make selections in the winter and the spring. The scope of the recognition evolved. For instance, ice hockey was not recognized until 1962 by the Globe. I do not know the background of the Boston Herald.

We are unsure about when athletic teams were recognized as state champions and who may compile that information. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)was founded in 1978, and was preceded by both the Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association (MSSPA) (1942–1978) and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Council (MIAC) (1950–1978).
