Teaching and Learning Assistant, Harvard Library Archives, Arts, and Special Collections,

Harvard Library is seeking a motivated library and information science graduate student to serve as a Teaching and Learning Assistant for Archives and Special Collections. This role will work closely with the Teaching and Learning unit within Archives and Special Collections Public Services to support our large and complex teaching program across the Harvard University Archives and Houghton Library. This program brings students from across and beyond Harvard to engage with archives and special collections through class visits, reading room assignments, and other instructional support. The Teaching and Learning assistant will work across archival and rare book collections to support the daily operations of this program, including tasks like researching collection material for class use, maintaining classrooms, and assisting with in-class handling and monitoring. Along the way, the Teaching and Learning Assistant will develop skills and experience in special collections librarianship, particularly primary source instruction and public services.

DUTIES

  • Assist with special collections instruction, including researching collection material relevant to course topics, requesting materials, paging collection material, and setting up collection material in classrooms
  • Provide support for logistics and coordination of instruction and fellowship classes and workshops
  • Maintain classroom supplies and technology
  • Monitor handling in classes, workshops, and reading room
  • Greet and assist researchers in the use of the library, and explain library policies and procedures
  • Additional duties in the Archives, Arts, and Special Collections Public Services department may be possible depending on interest and availability

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A strong public services orientation and interest in developing reference and instruction skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the needs of a diverse user base
  • Aptitude for detail, accuracy, and efficiency; good organizational skills

Preferred

  • Interest in a career in archives and special collections work
  • Completion of courses in archives and special collections and/or reference

HOURS
A regular schedule of 14 hours a week to be worked within business hours of Monday-Friday, 9-5

$22.00 / hour
