Research Fellow – 18th Century Labor and Domestic Service, Historic New England, (Portsmouth, NH)

Historic New England is seeking applicants for one, part-time researcher specializing in the history of labor and domestic service in New England. Their research in this fellowship will focus on Portsmouth, NH from the late 1700s through the early 1900s paying particular attention to Black and Irish laborers, workers, domestic servants and any other communities typically overlooked or silenced by the historical record. They will utilize all resources available to extend and deepen our knowledge of this history then work with staff to apply that research to the interpretation at our Portsmouth historic house museum, Langdon House.

This position will start in September of 2024, is up to 20 hours a week, has a flexible schedule at the rate of $24 per hour, and is term limited for 9 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct extensive primary and secondary research to deepen and broaden our knowledge of the topics, subjects, stories, and people, particularly as they relate to Historic New England sites
  • Collaborate with the other researchers and staff to incorporate the research products into
    transformative experiences at our sites
  • Initiate new and help grow existing relationships with communities who are directly connected to and impacted by this research and its implementation into the programming at our sites
  • Participate in and contribute to Historic New England’s culture through staff training, blogs and
    vlogs, and public programs
