Senior Youth Services Librarian
The Lynnfield Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and creative person to join our collaborative and friendly team as a full-time assistant in our Youth Services department. Supervision Received:
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Youth Services or other higher-level staff member who assigns work, outlines procedures, and provides training and technical guidance as necessary. Duties are generally performed on own initiative in accordance with established procedures, referring unusual problems to the supervisor.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists in planning and conducting children’s and teen programs including story times on a regular basis.
- Assists in reference and reader’s advisory services for children and teens.
- Carries out other artistic projects to decorate/illustrate children’s programs, services, and spaces.
- Participates in book selection of juvenile materials with the Head of Youth Services.
- Works as part of the social media and marketing team, including, but not limited to, creating and posting content on social media.
- Prepares and organizes materials for circulation. This may include shelf reading, shifting, labeling of collection, or weeding.
- Acts as staff member in charge in absence of Department Head.
- Upholds patron privacy laws and confidentiality policies.
- Uses proficient working knowledge of automated procedures to carry out all circulation functions as well as assigned special projects.
- Performs a regular rotation at the adult circulation desk in all aspects of circulation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and public service experience with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and ability.
- Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials and practices.
- Ability to work independently, with care to detail for circulation, programming, and the general provision of library services; enthusiasm for the provision quality public service, especially with children; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to exercise mature independent judgment; ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with others, including the general public.
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace, Canva, and/or Evergreen is preferred.
35 hours per week, including one scheduled evening per week and one scheduled Saturday every four weeks on the adult circulation desk.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, use hands to grasp, operate, or control tools, and hear and talk. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, move quickly between checkout stations, and navigate all areas of the Library. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Salary:
$23.86/hour (will increase to $24.30 in Fiscal Year 2025), 35 hours per week. Union position with full municipal benefits.
