Library Intern, Williston Northampton School, Easthampton, Massachusetts

The Williston Northampton School is seeking a paid library intern to support students and faculty in grades 7-12. Current library students, recent library school graduates, or individuals with demonstrated work/volunteer experience in libraries are invited to apply. This nine-month position will provide paid, on-the-job experience.

Reporting to the Library Director, the Library Intern will help ensure the library is a welcoming, service-oriented place. The intern will help supervise a two-story library space that is often bustling with students. This individual will have the opportunity to assist with collection development, library instruction, and other projects of interest.

This nine-month position will run September 3, 2024 – May 31, 2025, 15-20 hours per week including one regular evening shift 5:00pm – 10:00pm and the occasional Sunday night shifts 7:00pm-10:00pm. The primary responsibilities are; collaborate with teachers to support assignments that require library or research time; Provide reference services to students and faculty; assist patrons with technology needs; help with circulation and book shelving; respond promptly to emails during school hours. Additional responsibilities based on interest and knowledge level may include creating library displays; examining catalog records with an eye towards equity and inclusion (diversity audit), Copy Cataloging; book processing; updating assignment guides on the LibGuides platform; researching other school libraries and their best practices; Creating content for tutorials; other duties as assigned.

The qualified candidate should have: completed or current enrollment in an MLS program and/or previous experience working in a public library or school library; experience working with young adults; ability to establish effective and collaborative working relationships with students and colleagues; appropriate technology skills to accomplish job responsibilities; strong organizational and time management skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; must be able to work intuitively and independently. Must have the ability to work in a school environment by successful completion of all legally required and school required background checks including the state mandated CORI, Criminal Offender Record Information, SORI, Sex Offender Record Information, and fingerprint based criminal background check.
