Minimum educational/experience qualifications: Actively enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science degree program or a similar degree program or possess relevant archival experience. Recent LIS graduates are also encouraged to apply.

Schedule: 20 hours per week. Actual work schedule and hours may be flexible to accommodate the Assistant Archivist’s academic schedule. Because of the nature of the position, all work must be completed on-site. The Archives’ hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Compensation: $15/hour for 20 hours a week (no benefits) is generously funded by the New England Methodist Conference

About the Library:

The archives for the New England Methodist Conference Archives and the Boston University School of Theology Library, is located on the second floor of the Boston University School of Theology. The goal of the institution is to build a library and archives that supports the New England Methodist Conference and the School of Theology in its mission to “cultivate leaders for communities of faith, to enrich the academy, and to seek peace with justice in a diverse and interconnected world.” The
archives collects the records of both the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Boston University School of Theology.

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Archives and Special Collections Librarian and staff of the library, the Assistant Archivist uses established archival standards and local best practices to enhance access to the collection. The Assistant Archivist will be responsible for the accessioning, processing, arrangement, and description of both paper-based and digital records and conduct basic archival preservation activities. They will create finding aids using DACS in ArchivesSpace and will assist in research services. They will also assist in the mentoring and supervision of student workers and interns. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Actively enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in library science, archival management, history, or a related field. Recent LIS graduates are also encouraged to apply.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills.
  • Ability to take direction and accept constructive feedback.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift archival boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of DACS, ArchivesSpace, LCSH, AACR2, and RDA is preferred but not necessary.
