Adult Reference/Local History Librarian, Niagara Falls Public Library, Niagara Falls, NY

Niagara Falls Public Library is looking to hire a new member in its Reference Services Department. Prospective candidates should enjoy working with a diverse population and delivering high-quality customer service with tact, courtesy, and professionalism to all users of the library – both on-site and in the community.  The  Reference Services  Librarian will provide engaging and inclusive programming, as well as outreach to adults and researchers.

This position reports to the  Executive Library Director.

POSITION: Librarian 1 (Full Time) – Reference Services Department

SPECIFIC DUTIES (illustrative):

  • Plan and implement engaging  learning programs 
  • Collection development, maintenance, and displays to promote materials.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, and other area libraries to offer programs and services.
  • Outreach opportunities such as tabling at events.
  • Provide reference services and reader advisory to patrons in the adult section of the Main and Lasalle Library Branches, assist patrons with the use of technology, and post on social media about library services.
  • Provide reference services and readers advisory to researchers in the local history room, assist patrons with research guides and inventory catalog. technology, and post on social media about local history services.
  • Participation in workshops, seminars, and continuing education to enhance job skills, as appropriate; Serve on committees and working groups as necessary
  • Identifying alternative funding sources and grant writing ( either  independently or in conjunction with the City’s grant writer)
  • Formation of new community partnerships 
  • Other duties as assigned

WORK SCHEDULE:

37 hours per week, spread over 5 days; a combination of daytime, evening and Saturday hours

SALARY RANGE: $22.3815 – $31.3454 / hr.;  $40,734 – $57,048 Annual, Grade 17A

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

MLS or equivalent from an ALA Accredited Library School (required)

NYS Public Librarian’s Certificate (required)

Commitment to customer-centered, quality public library service

Excellent communication skills

Attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and with others

Desirable:

Candidate with  multilingual skills 

Knowledge and passion for Western New York history

Coursework in  archival practices

RESIDENCY:   Candidates are strongly encouraged to live in the City of Niagara Falls within 6 months of hire, Librarian 1 candidates may live in Niagara or Erie County.
