Youth Services Librarian, Hill Library, (Strafford, NH)

Youth Services Librarian

40 hours per week, Benefited

Salary range $16.00-$18.00 per hour

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Experience in providing library service preferred.
  • Experience in working with youth necessary.
  • Ability to successfully plan, implement and carry out innovative age appropriate Children’s and Young Adult programming required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, MLS from an ALA accredited program preferred. 
  • Knowledge of youth programming and literature. 
  • Experience with Atriuum library management system is helpful. 
  • Knowledge of MS Office software and social media platforms is helpful. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously (spoken and written) with all age levels, abilities, and backgrounds is required, as well as read to children with lively expression.
  • Must be able to effectively read and understand information in written form.
  • A willingness to share camaraderie and humor within our small group is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with the Freedom to Read Statement, ALA Library Bill of Rights, and Ethical Principles of Librarianship.

Duties: 

  • Participating in the daily activities of the library, including circulation, reference, and technical services.
  • Planning and conducting youth programming on a weekly basis.
  • Planning and conducting a summer reading program for children in conjunction with local schools and community groups, area libraries and national consortia.
  • Creating displays and settings to encourage reading.
  • Assisting library patrons in finding materials they want and answering reference questions.
  • Acquiring program related supplies and any other items needed for children’s programming.
  • Composing and preparing public relations materials (such as news releases, flyers, brochures, and social media) and clearing them with the library director before they are printed or put out for the public. 
  • Responsible for maintaining a well-balanced collection of materials meeting the needs of the community’s youth. 
  • Responsible for assisting with the development of a budget for all juvenile materials and programs, as well as seeking outside funding for this budget.
  • Supervising and training any youth services library assistants, interns, and volunteers.
  • Communicating with homeschoolers, teachers, students, parents and community members to help improve library services. 
  • Working at the Circulation Desk as needed. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment with moderate noise.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop and reach with hands and arms. 
  • Required to sit and stand for extended periods of time, including working on the floor with lowest levels of bookshelves. 
  • Required to lift on occasion, up to 25 pounds; able to push a cart of materials up to 75 pounds.  
  • Light housekeeping and extensive computer work required.
