Description:
The Reference and Technology Services Librarian oversees and maintains the library tech room and assists in planning, organizing, and implementing library services. Provides public service duties including circulation, technology assistance, reference, and readers advisory services as well as the development and maintenance of specific library collections.
Supervision
Reports to and performs duties under the general supervision of library management; is familiar with work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently and without specific instructions. Library management provides instructions, for new or other responsibilities. Required to work independently and as part of a team in the analysis and evaluation of programs and in the development of new and/or revised programs.
Essential Functions –
Oversees and maintains library’s tech room including patron computers, scanners, printers, and other patron use technology; Identifies and recommends emerging technology purchases for tech room use
Fills in at public service desks, providing exceptional customer service to patrons of all ages
Develops and teaches workshops in basic technology to individuals or groups of patrons
Provides assistance to patrons troubleshooting technology and one-on-one technology support.
Performs basic troubleshooting of library software and hardware
Provides engaging reference and reader’s advisory services using a variety of digital, electronic, and print resources
Instructs and assists in the use of public catalogs and databases both in library and outreach to community groups
Assists patrons accessing the library’s collections in various formats including print, electronic, library of things, and historical and cultural resources
Identifies and recommends additional databases and other digital resources or tools for purchase or
subscription
Develop and maintain a Technology Plan with library management; maintains records to document and facilitate software and database licensing and relicensing; maintains preventative maintenance and replacement schedules for all information technology and audiovisual hardware
Engages in outreach to, and develops and maintains partnerships and relationships with local community, civic, and business groups and organizations, as well as municipal departments
Collaborates with staff to review, select, and place orders for collections in accordance with the library’s Selection of Materials Policy; verifies orders for exact bibliographic data and related information to ensure proper billing; assigns appropriate library classification to collections overseen in all formats
Participates in updating website and social media presence; Promotes new and existing library collections, services, programs, and events through outreach and in-library efforts, and via print, web, and social media
May participate in presentations, programing, or other engagement activities
Trains library staff on library hardware and software as it relates to patron use technology
Work a flexible schedule including evening/weekend assignments
Keeps current in trends and best practices in the library profession; attends professional workshops,
seminars, conferences, and continuing educational opportunities; represents the library at SAILS network meetings when relevant and/or requested by Director
Develops and maintains effective working relationships
Works independently and as part of a team
Maintains patron confidentiality
Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned
May be called upon to open or close the building
Required Experience, Skills, and Knowledge
Knowledge of library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information
technology
Knowledge of library circulation operations
Principles, theories, and concepts of library services
Excellent problem-solving, time management, and public speaking skills
Knowledge and experience working with computer software applications & online databases
Proficiency in current and emerging technologies
Flexibility in prioritizing projects
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Proficient in communication and active listening, adept at conveying complex information with clarity
and precision
Analyze complex problems and evaluate alternatives/creative solutions
Evenings and Saturdays are required
Physical Requirements
Reach and retrieve books at high and low shelf heights; ability to stand/sit for prolonged periods of time;
to lift and/or move up to 50lbs
Education
Master of Library Science degree or working toward MLS degree preferred. Equivalent may be decided
by the Library Director
Salary/Wage
$24.00 Hourly
