Senior Circulation Librarian, Lynnfield Public Library, MA

Performs as a full-time staff librarian in the Circulation Department, providing a wide variety of
basic library services using the automated library circulation system, Evergreen. Supervises and
assists circulation staff if the Head of Circulation is unavailable. Duties are generally performed
on one’s own initiative in accordance with established procedures, referring unusual problems to
the Head of Circulation. Must have a substantive knowledge of the Library’s collections, services,
systems, policies and procedures.

Supervision Received:

Reports to Library Director but works under the general supervision of the Head of Circulation,
who assigns work, outlines Circulation procedures, and provides training and technical guidance
as necessary.

Supervision Exercised: While not directly responsible for supervising pages or library
technicians, the Senior Circulation Librarian may assign work, outline procedures, and provide
training and technical assistance as necessary and in the absence of the Head of Circulation.

General Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides a high level of customer service to patrons of all ages in person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Performs clerical duties including, but not limited to, hold shelf cleanup, overdue & bill notices, the museum pass program, weekly cash reconciliation, and the like.
  • Works as part of the social media and marketing team, including, but not limited to, creating and posting content on social media. Assists in reviewing website content for accuracy and usability.
  • Plans and maintains monthly book displays around the Library. Serves as a member of the display committee.
  • Assists with set-up and facilitating virtual and in-person programs planned by the Head of Youth Services and/or Assistant Director.
  • May assist Department Heads and Director in special projects. May represent the Library at town functions or off-site Library activities. Acts as staff member in charge of the Circulation Department in the absence of the Head of Circulation.
  • Answers informational questions and refers more complex questions to appropriate departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performs circulation desk procedures, including, but not limited to, checking in and checking out
of materials, registering new patrons, updating patron accounts. Assists patrons in using Senior Circulation Librarian March 2024

photocopiers, online registration systems, and finding and retrieving materials within the library
building. Sorts and routes mail. Upholds patron privacy laws and confidentiality policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree and some previous library experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and ability
  • Strong technology skills, including office equipment, are essential
  • Some experience with graphic design programs, such as Canva, is a plus Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Broad knowledge of library principles, methods, materials and practices.
  • Excellent customer interaction skills, including ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate professionally. Ability to use and troubleshoot various computer software and programs. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required
to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, use hands to grasp, operate, or control tools, and
hear and talk. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch.
Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. The employee
will occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, move quickly between checkout stations, and
navigate all areas of the Library. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable

Schedule: This is a benefitted, full-time 35 hours per week position. This person must be able to
work Tuesday evenings until 9pm and one scheduled Saturday in a four-week rotation.

Compensation Class: Staff Librarian
$23.8637-$26.6789/hour. Union Position.
