Brimmer and May School, an all-gender PK-12 independent day school in Chestnut Hill, MA seeks a collaborative, dynamic and innovative librarian for the Lower School (grades PK-5) to support the school in its mission of developing “informed, engaged, and ethical citizens and leaders for the global community”. This librarian will fulfill various roles to ensure students effectively access and use information, teaches library classes for grades PK-5, leads the School’s digital citizenship curriculum, and serves as the literature expert to the Lower School. This is a 10-month full time position with an option of 4/5s time employment. The Lower School Librarian reports to the Director of Libraries and the Lower School Head.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
· Have a passion for and current knowledge of children’s literature and be able to inspire that in others.
· Teach library class weekly to students in grades PreK through Grade 5.
· Create an inclusive environment and effectively employ multicultural, anti-bias, teaching strategies that reflect cultural competence and align with the School’s DEIB goals.
· Integrate the Brimmer and May Research Scope and Sequence into instruction.
· Collaborate and co-teach with fourth and fifth grade teachers to instruct students in all matters related to research and inquiry, citation, information gathering, evaluation, and synthesis.
· Collaborate with the Creative Arts team, to provide a weekly music focused class for students who don’t participate in band class.
· Internal consultant for professional development, curriculum planning, and instruction as it pertains to information literacy and technology.
· Build collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to assist with curriculum development, especially around literature and research.
· Strong ability to communicate and work collaboratively with faculty, students, parent volunteers, and administrators.
· Meets regularly with library director and frequently communicates with technology department members.
· Work with Director of Teaching and Learning to connect classroom curriculum to library experiences and skills.
· Work with the LS Director of Teaching and Learning to oversee the Design Lab to bring making into the library class experience.
· Oversee general collection and cataloging activities to manage and curate Library materials.
· Uses multicultural materials and resources.
· Maintains a monthly newsletter providing resources for the community.
Qualifications:
· Master’s or certificate in library science or equivalent required
· Previous library experience required, preferably in an elementary school setting.
· Demonstrated experience building and navigating a library collection consisting of up to date digital and print resources.
· Effective, timely and professional communication skills
· Keen problem-solving skills and creativity.
· Willingness to take risks and try new things.
· A demonstrated interest in furthering professional development
