2024 Summer Internship Program, Practicing Law Institute, New York, NY

 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Internship Program will begin on Monday, June 10th, and end on Thursday August 1st in our midtown Manhattan office. All interns will be scheduled to work onsite from Monday through Thursday each week for 7 hours each day plus a one-hour unpaid meal break. This is a paid internship with a salary of $18 per hour.

We have Summer Internship opportunities available in each of the following departments:

1. Accounting Department

The Accounting department maintains financial books and records.

Accounting Intern duties:

  • The summer intern will help with various projects including data entry/reconciliation into the new software / contract system, Torii
  • Update procedures manual using Scribe (AI tool)
  • Collaborate with the team on accounting dashboard projects (part of our internal Data Academy)

Qualifications

  • Rising senior college undergraduate
  • 2024 college graduate from an accredited undergraduate program

2. Continuing Legal Education Department

The Continuing Legal Education (CLE) department applies for and maintains CLE credit in all 45 of the United States’ jurisdictions that have a mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) requirement.         

CLE Intern duties:

Depending on the candidate’s skills and talents, the tasks may vary. A list of ideas:

  • Update EPiServer fields for credit carousels (Epi and CMS skills are valuable)
  • Rewrite the style of credit info page blocks (if the candidate has writing skills or design sense)
  • Help migrate CLE Department instructions from OneNote to Scribe
  • Work on data projects related to attendance reporting with an MCLE Coordinator
  • Assist MCLE Compliance Analyst on data projects related to the building of the dashboard

Qualifications

  • Rising senior college undergraduate
  • 2024 college graduate from an accredited undergraduate program

3. Human Resources Department

The Human Resources (HR) department is responsible for recruiting, benefits administration, employee engagement, and onboarding of new PLI employees. The department provides coaching and professional development training, develops policies and procedures, ensures compliance with employment and benefit laws, and manages annual performance review and merit increase program. Our benefits team administers employee benefits and retirement savings plans and performs compensation analysis. 

Human Resources Intern duties:

Benefits:

  • Organize all files of terminated staff, retirees’ files, and active employees’ files to be sent to Iron Mountain. Maintain Excel spreadsheet with each person’s name, department, job title, date of hire, date of termination, box #, date sent to Iron Mountain, date to be destroyed (based on retention policy), before shipping out the boxes.
  • Prepare, label, and mail birthday cards with Office Services; post birthdays and employment anniversaries on PLI Intranet
  • Order gift baskets for new babies and get-well baskets for employees out on leave
  • Post informational flyers on NY office bulletin boards
  • Schedule exit interviews for departing employees
  • Other HR administrative duties, as needed

Employee Engagement:

  • Helps organize employee events, including volunteer events and the 2024 summer outing
  • Provide support for employee event activities
  • Research volunteer opportunities
  • Special Projects as assigned

Talent Acquisition:

  • Open job requisitions in Greenhouse Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and put through the approval process
  • Interview Scheduling: Coordinate virtual or onsite interviews with candidates and Hiring Managers for open jobs via Greenhouse ATS
  • Research niche job boards and job market data
  • Send new hire/departure announcements and track status in Jira
  • Create new hire electronic folders, new hire checklists, and saving documents appropriately

Qualifications

  • Confidentiality is a critical aspect of this Intern assignment
  • Ability to multi-task and comfort in asking questions are important
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail are needed
  • Intermediate excel skills will be useful
  • Flexibility, some assignments will be very clerical and others more focused/HR-specific
  • Rising senior college undergraduate
  • 2024 college graduate from an accredited undergraduate program

4. Legal Information and Electronic Publishing Department 

The Legal Information and Electronic Publishing department is responsible for the

strategy, creation, and ongoing development of our online research product known as PLI PLUS.

We are a customer-facing Library Relations team who supports PLI’s print and electronic subscriptions. 

Librarian Archivist Intern duties:

  • Archive older publication for conversion to PLUS
  • Work through backlog of publications to put on PLUS which will increase usage
  • We will provide training on the use of our taxonomy systems.

Qualifications

  • A 2024 LIS rising senior, or MLIS graduate student is the ideal intern candidate for this department.

5. Business Corporate Department 

The Business Corporate department has a responsibility to acquire, retain, renew, and grow PLI’s Enterprise Revenuewhich makes up more than 85% of PLI revenue.

Data Science Intern duties:

  • Conduct data validation and logistical regression on newly created data dashboards

Qualifications

Qualified interns fall under one of the following categories:

  • Rising senior college undergraduate
  • 2024 college graduate from an accredited undergraduate program
  • 2024 or recent law school graduate

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.  Some intern assignments will require familiarity with department specific software.
