The Town of Acton is seeking candidates for the full-time, benefitted position of the Head of Patron Services. Acton is an increasingly diverse town of about 25,000 residents. This professional position will work a 40-hour work week overseeing all aspects and functions of the Patron Services Department, including staff hiring, training, and supervision and all circulation activity at Acton Memorial Library. We are seeking a friendly, adaptive, enthusiastic, service-oriented individual to help serve our community within a busy library setting. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, cares about accuracy, and can handle stressful situations with grace and good humor. This position requires current knowledge of library trends and best practices. Customer service experience is highly valued.
General Duties and Responsibilities: This position supervises 15 full and part-time staff; also supervises volunteer and Senior workers either directly or through delegation. Serves as a member of the Library Leadership team under the Director to plan and coordinate overall library services. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing complaints and resolving any issues that arise. This position will develop and maintain Patron Services staff schedules; implement and oversee cross-training of all staff duties. Ability to work with library staff and a diverse general public in a constructive and welcoming manner. Check materials in and out and renewing materials either in person or via telephone. Assist users and answer library users’ questions and interpret and enforce library policies and procedures to the public. Coordinate and maintain first floor displays. Process loan requests from non-MLN libraries and Comcat, producing statistical and budget reports, providing readers’ advisory support, serving patrons of all ages by locating information via all print and electronic resources Perform these and all other duties as assigned at the discretion of supervisors.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science plus three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional library work preferably managing diverse teams of people; experience in library circulation work; supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a busy customer service setting; leadership skills; strong soft skills including emotional intelligence; demonstrated commitment to public service and staff development; comfort and confidence in all matters of technology, including experience with social media; excellent organization and interpersonal skills; experience working with different cultures and abilities. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience with III Millennium™; or Sierra™ ILS; participation in hiring decisions; experience using RFID, knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
Special Requirements: Work schedule includes one night a week, one Saturday in three and occasional Sundays; also, occasional confidentiality is essential; ability to travel occasionally to other sites in Acton, the Network’s Central Site in Natick, and other locations in eastern Massachusetts.
Pay Rate: I-11, starting at $33.43 – $36.53/hour; $69,542.20 – $75, 990.98/annually
