About the Program
Emory University Woodruff Library Resource Services Department offers a paid graduate internship in inclusive resource description focused on subject analysis of LGBTQ+ materials and the application of LGBTQ+ terminology to improve description and discoverability of LGBTQ+ library resources. Individuals from underrepresented groups who have a demonstrated interest in LGBTQ+ research or inclusive cataloging are encouraged to apply. Applicants may be graduate students in any area with interest in LGBTQ+ topics and librarianship or current MLIS students and recent graduates.
Under the supervision of experienced catalogers, the successful candidate will:
- Gain practical skills and experience in bibliographic description of Emory libraries’ materials
- Gain understanding of practical aspects of critical cataloging
- Gain practical experience with subject analysis of library materials and identification of areas within the library collection that could benefit from more inclusive and thoughtful subject analysis
- Gain practical experience in assigning Homosaurus terms
- Assist in identifying existing Library of Congress classification number ranges and subject headings that could be useful in identifying LGBTQ+ materials for additional subject analysis using Homosaurus
- Assist in developing policies, procedures and training documentation to support use of Homosaurus terms in the Emory Library catalog
The internship will take place in Summer 2024 and will be carried out on site at the Emory University Woodruff library. This program is on-site and may be full-time (maximum 40 hours per week) or part-time (less than 40 hours per week), earning $18.50/hour. Additionally, there may be limited funding available to support approved professional development opportunities like workshop attendance, conference participation, or professional organization membership fees. This internship opportunity is scheduled for May 28-August 2, 2024.
Requirements:
Candidates will:
- Identify as a person from an underrepresented community
- Demonstrate interest in librarianship and specifically cataloging and subject analysis
- Have current enrollment in or recent completion of a graduate program (any field)
