Technical Services Intern, State Library of Massachusetts, Boston, MA

The State Library of Massachusetts is looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and detail-
oriented library intern to assist with cataloging and other special projects in the
Technical Services Department. You will learn how to use various cataloging tools and
standards, such as OCLC, MARC, RDA, and LCSH, to create and update bibliographic
records for our collections. You will also gain experience in quality control, authority
control, and metadata management. The State Library was established in 1826 to
collect, deposit, and house the Commonwealth’s collections of maps, statute books, and
government documents in a single central location. Since that time, the State Library has
grown into a multifaceted and reliable resource for legislators, executive personnel,
state employees, historians, genealogists, and users from all over the world. Come and

Duties:

  • Under the supervision of Librarians assists with original and copy cataloging of monographs, serials, and other library materials in all formats and all associated authority work.
  • Barcode, label and process newly cataloged materials and add/modify record information in the State Library’s Evergreen ILS.
  • Upload and edit electronic documents in the State Library’s Digital Repository (DSpace).
  • Digitize library materials not in electronic form for addition to the DSpace repository.
  • Assist with library database and special projects. Assists with collection maintenance and inventory projects.

Qualifications:

  • MLS student with cataloging experience and interest in learning current cataloging rules and practice and MARC format
  • Familiarity with OCLC, integrated library systems, and discovery systems,
  • Evergreen and Aspen a plus
  • Familiarity with with digital repository software and content management systems a plus
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, and the ability to learn other software applications independently
  • Experience with scanning equipment and tools a plus
  • Interest in Massachusetts history and government a plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form
  • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple priorities
