Part-Time Circulation Staff, Fitchburg State University (Fitchburg, MA)

General Statement of Duties: The Public Services Assistant is responsible for the operation and supervision of the Public Services Department when assigned an evening or weekend shift when full-time staff are not available. Tasks include managing the circulation desk, supervising student assistants, stacks maintenance, processing interlibrary loan requests, and other projects as assigned.

Supervision Received: This position reports to the Head of Access Services and will receive direction from full-time Public Services Library Assistants. This position works under the overall direction of the Library Dean.

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision of part-time student assistants.

Detailed Statement of Duties:

  1. Supervise and work at the circulation desk performing general circulation functions such as charging and discharging library items, training and supervising students, explaining policies, and processing fines/fees.
  2. Assist with monitoring the department’s email accounts.
  3. Assist with supervising, scheduling, and monitoring the library’s study rooms.
  4. Search and retrieve requested items from the library’s collections.
  5. Assist with scanning books and journals for interlibrary loan and document delivery.
  6. Log Public Services statistics.
  7. Assist patrons with using the course reserve and interlibrary loan and document delivery systems.
  8. Assist with stacks maintenance including shelving and shelf-reading, training and supervising student assistants, and shifting collections.
  9. Responsible for assisting students with library equipment, i.e., troubleshooting, ensuring printers are equipped with paper, and submitting IT work orders for equipment repairs.
  10. Performs regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Submitting work orders for building and or other facilities issues as they arise.
  11. When scheduled on a weekend, evening, early morning or holiday, responsible for opening and closing and securing the library with support from public safety personnel in the evenings.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience in a customer service environment and the ability to interact professionally with coworkers, students, faculty, and other library users.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  4. Ability to work with diverse student populations.
  5. Ability to organize work, to assess priorities, and to work independently.
  6. Ability to acquire knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in academic library work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in a library.
  2. Bilingual (Spanish-speaking).
  3. Demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed precision work.
  4. Experience with an automated library circulation system, preferably ExLibris Alma/Primo.
  5. Knowledge of interlibrary loan and document delivery procedures. Preferably experience with Illiad software and ExLibris Rapido.
  6. Supervisory experience: hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, disciplinary action.
  7. Flexibility to cover other shifts as needed.


Additional Information:

Shift Information:  This is a part time, non-benefited position. 17.25 hours per week during the academic year at $19 per hour. 

Fall/Spring Semesters hours*:

Shift:

  • Sunday, 6:00-11:45pm
  • Monday, 6:00-11:45pm
  • Tuesday, 6:00-11:45pm

*On a limited number of days during final examination periods, hours may extend until 12:15am.

Summer Semesters: Limited hours may be available.

*Limited hours may be available during intersessions (time between semesters). Library is open on select holidays and also during University closures due to weather/snow. Additional night and weekend shifts may be available.
