Young Adult Librarian, HOPKINTON PUBLIC LIBRARY, Hopkinton, MA

The purpose of this position is to perform professional and direct service work advising and assisting tweens and teens in identifying, accessing, navigating, and retrieving information at the Library; to assist patrons with technology; to lead collection development of Young Adult (YA) collections; to plan and implement Young Adult services and programs that invite and excite the targeted population. Creativity and innovation are important and encouraged in this role.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: 

  • Knowledge of young adults (teens & tweens), stages of development, how to interact with them, their interests, and frames of reference. 
  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, database use, and instruction; knowledge of what is taught in schools to assist teens with homework guidance. 
  • Knowledge of budget/money allocation to manage YA budget. 
  • Knowledge of trends in YA librarianship.
  • Ability to interact with parents and other community members who work with teens and tweens.
  • Knowledge of young adult literature, various genres, authors, popular series, and where to go to find current and best information about this literature. 
  • Ability to make presentations and read literature aloud.
  • Skill in organizational, writing, and interpersonal/collaborative communication.
  • Skill in community outreach and collaboration with other town departments and organizations. 
  • Computer skills that encompass effective use of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, email, social media, internet browser, and library software.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) or similar field from an American Library Association accredited program with two (2) to four (4) years of progressively responsible library experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Individuals working toward an MLIS with public library experience leading to the possession of related knowledge, ability, and skills will be considered. Some experience working with teens and young adults preferred.

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 9:30-6:00,  Wednesday from 11:30 to 8:00 and Friday 8:30-5:00

Salary Range

$28.83 – $34.59  /  hour

Salary Notes

Salary depending on qualifications Competitive Leave, Benefits & County Pension.
