Metadata Assistant Digital Services (Part-time), Boston Public Library, (Boston, MA)

Overview:

The Boston Public Library is seeking applicants for a part-time Metadata Assistant position in the Digital Services unit. The person in this position will support all aspects of the digital production workflow, including metadata creation and enrichment. This position is based in the Central Library in Copley Square and requires the person in the role to work on-site.

Digital Projects Manager or delegate

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all activities related to metadata and imaging production, including preparation and delivery of materials as needed.
  • Creates and/or completes standards-based metadata records (including, but not limited to, description, subject analysis, and authority work) for digital resources to be retrieved from local systems and/or for external exposure or harvesting.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices, standards, technologies, and crowd/community-sourced input trends related to descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata for digital projects.
  • Performs other related and/or comparable duties as assigned.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Familiarity with cataloging best practices, schemas, vocabularies, and content standards is desirable (including, but not limited to, MODS, RDF, MARC, Dublin Core, EAD, DCRM suite, LCSH, TGM, TGN, ULAN, AAT, RDA, and BIBFRAME).
  • Keen attention to detail and aptitude for speed, accuracy, and efficiency. Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift boxes up to 40 pounds and move book carts.
  • Willingness to work up to 18 hours per week.
  • Past experience working on digital projects in a library setting using standards-based non-MARC metadata is desirable.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university.
  • Past or current enrollment in an accredited Master’s program in Library and Information Science (or equivalent).
  • Courses in digital libraries, XML, and/or standards-based non-MARC metadata.
  • Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire
  • CORI: Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
