Intern Projects Available (2024-2025), The Mayflower Society, Plymouth, MA

Description:

Book Stabilization Project
Systematically review all the books in our collection that have been taken out of circulation due to condition. Assess the conservation needs of each volume and make recommendations. Conduct basic repairs as knowledge allows. Develop a system for tracking conservation needs.

Plymouth County Records Collection
This archival collection, dating to the 1700s, needs to be appropriately housed, identified, and a Finding Aid created.

Family Bibles
Pull all of the family Bible transcripts from the archival (green) boxes. Compile transcripts of family Bibles in the archives collection that have not yet been transcribed. Scan any Bibles that have not yet been scanned and develop a transcript. Create a Family Bibles Finding Aid.

Data Entry Project (Can be done remotely)
The Next Generation (TNG) is the genealogy program used by the Mayflower Society. We have thousands of typed cards that were formerly used to look up a genealogy. These need to be systematically entered into the software.

Mayflower Descendants Review
Review NEHGS publications and “Mayflower Descendants” for corrections that impact Silver Books Research. This project involves reviewing years’ worth of the publication “Mayflower Descendants” to determine which articles have genealogical information relative to the first six generations of descendants of the Mayflower. All such articles will be flagged and annotated so that they can be incorporated into Silver Book research and corrections.

Storage and Digitization Project
The Mayflower Society has a collection of genealogical manuscripts and documents that needs to be re-housed and digitized. This project will have the intern removing the contents of each box, reviewing the finding aid information for accuracy, scanning the documents, and re-housing in appropriate storage.

Developing the E-Book Library (Some tasks can be done remotely)
Scan books in our library to add to the e-library. Find books in our library that are available for free on Google Books; add to catalog.

Library Catalog Project
Assist the Mayflower Society as we transition from an Excel library catalog to an official library database, such as Library Thing. Conduct research on the product to assist in the final decision. Help develop protocols and assist with the transition.
