About this opportunity:
The Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ) is seeking an undergraduate student for
part-time support reconciling archival materials. This position will report to Professor Margaret Burnham, the founder and director of the project, and the CRRJ Research Associate, Lydia Beal.
The Burnham-Nobles Digital Archive is an opensource file repository and database on lethal anti-
Black violence in the Jim Crow South. Since the digital archive’s launch in 2022, the 13,000 currently
available records have served as a resource to families of deceased victims, researchers, and policy
makers. As we prepare for the 2024 launch of additional cases and materials, we are seeking support in reconciling our internal files.
Informed by the best practices in academic and archival research and in collaboration with
CRRJ’s faculty, staff, and students, this part-time work-study student will be tasked to aggregate
previously investigated case files in preparation for the 2024 Version 2 Launch of the Burnham Nobles
Digital Archive. This data work requires basic proficiency in Airtable and Excel.
Qualifications:
This candidate must be highly motivated, organized, and detail oriented. Additionally, this
candidate must be resourceful and prepared for extensive reading. This candidate must have basic
computer skills, experience with Excel and Dropbox, and familiarity with programs such as Clio, and
Airtable. The majority of assigned tasks will be conducted during standard business hours.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide support reviewing existing case files.
- Naming and uploading documents to Clio in accordance with CRRJ’s standards.
- Attend regular meetings with Lydia Beal and be prepared to report on assigned tasks.
- Be responsible while handling sensitive materials.
