The Boston Public Library (BPL) seeks a serials cataloger for the position of Cataloger and Classifier II (Serials Specialist), responsible for performing original and complex copy cataloging including bibliographic description, subject analysis, classification, and authority control for materials in all formats in accordance with established local and national policies, procedures, and standards. Advanced cataloging skills for serials will be required as needed. Special language competencies and/or subject knowledge will be required as needed. Beyond cataloging, the position will engage with all aspects of the BPL’s serials cataloging and record maintenance needs.
The BPL has a rich collection of serial material from the 21st, 20th, and 19th centuries, much of which is coming to light as part of a concerted effort to catalog the Library’s oldest material in our Founding Research Collection. Working collegially across a large dynamic organization, our ideal candidate will enjoy tackling both the routine and complex problems that serials present, and will excel in translating domain knowledge into practical solutions for daily work. Knowledge of Polaris ILS and working knowledge of non-English languages are a plus.
