Job Description
Working under the direction of the Director of Discovery Services, and in deep collaboration with the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian and the Systems Librarian, the Cataloging and Metadata Specialist executes strategies related to the discovery of the Library’s holding across multiple platforms. This position contributes to the work of the Discovery Services team, whose goal is ensure the effective discovery of the Library’s rich holdings in support of the academic mission of the College.
Adhering to standards and best practices, the Cataloging and Metadata Specialist performs tasks including: copy and original cataloging of library materials in a wide variety of languages and formats; database maintenance activities that maintain and enhance records of the Library’s tangible and electronic resources in the library catalog; metadata creation and management to support the library’s digital collections efforts; and the generation of reports from library platforms to support the work of internal and external partners.
Position Responsibility
- Performs copy and original and cataloging in a wide variety of languages and formats in an integrated library services platform. Applies current standards, including RDA and MARC 21; utilizes controlled vocabularies, including Library of Congress authorities and other thesauri, and Library of Congress classification; follows best practices in specialized cataloging, including rare materials and audiovisual media.
- Manages workflows to maintain currency of Library’s e-resources metadata through the batch processing, analysis, and editing of records from multiple vendors.
- Supports the creation and ongoing maintenance of metadata for digital assets in the platforms maintained by the College.
- Generates bibliographic and holdings data from the library catalog to support the work of Library colleagues and external partners such as Marcive and HathiTrust.
- Keeps abreast of trends and developments in open-source library services platforms; contributes to open-source library software user community.
Basic Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences or equivalent.
- 1-3 years experience providing cataloging and metadata services in a library (academic preferred).
