Library Director, Newbury Town Library, Byfield, MA

The Town of Newbury, through its elected Board of Library Trustees, seeks an energetic fulltime Library Director to manage all operations and activities of the Newbury Town Library. Our
ideal Director will be outgoing, have diverse library experience, and enthusiasm for working in a
small community.
Library Director is responsible for the management and operation of the library and the
programs of service in accordance with the policies established by the Trustees. The Director
works in close cooperation with the Trustees, serving as its advisor and as an active participant
in policy and budget development, goal setting, planning and evaluations. A full job description

The Newbury Town Library’s mission is to provide free and open access to materials, services,
and new technologies. We support life-long learning and enable the pursuit of knowledge and
the satisfaction of curiosity in our community. We’re reimagining library services and looking
for the right person to oversee that process with our eager and talented team.
The Director meets with and supports the Friends of Newbury Town Library, interacts with
town government, community groups, and local businesses to provide a community- and
patron-centered, technologically innovative library.
The Director oversees all library activities and resources, as well as the development and
delivery of library programs, collections, and services. The Director is responsible for
maintaining and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of all library functions as defined by
the library’s mission statement, its long-range plan, and policies which the Mass Board of
Library Commissioners (MBLC) sets forth.
Collaborating with staff, the Director is responsible for creation of cost-effective programs and
services to meet the interests of all the town’s age groups. In conjunction with staff, the
Director’s role also encompasses conducting public relations and marketing campaigns to
communicate the work and value of the library to the community.
The Director works with town officials and third-party agencies to ensure that the building and
grounds are properly maintained, and that patrons and employees enjoy a safe, comfortable,
and welcoming environment to visit and work in.
The ideal candidate will possess direct library operations and supervisory management
experience including initial preparation of an annual budget, evaluation of monthly
expenditures, and stewardship of donor-created funds. As circumstances dictate, presentations
to the Board of Trustees and municipal officials are required. Excellent digital knowledge, skills,
and expertise are essential to meet the library’s present and anticipated needs. The candidate
must also demonstrate broad understanding of current trends in library science and services as
well as experience in grant writing to ensure that the Newbury Town Library remains a relevant,
deeply meaningful public institution and gathering space for the community.
Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree, 5-years of progressively responsible library
administration experience and the pertinent MBLC Certificate of Librarianship. We prefer
candidates with a master’s degree in Library Science. The candidate will need to pass a CORI
records test.

This is a 35-hour a week, salaried, contract position and as such the Director will, from time to
time and as required, attend nighttime or weekend programs, events, and meetings. Salary
$70K +- depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits included.
