Commercial Library Binding Assistant (Less Than Half Time), Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

***This is a Less Than Half Time (LHT) position with up to 14 hours per week that will end on 06/30/2024***

Under the supervision of the Preservation Review Librarian for Harvard Library and according to established commercial library binding procedures and production standards, contributes to the conservation of general/circulating collections in Harvard Library by performing the following duties:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

·         Prepares serials, monographs, dissertations, and theses for commercial library binding.

·         Uses commercial bindery preparation software (ABLE) to communicate binding instructions to vendor

·         Consults Alma and other sources, including serials catalogers, to ensure bindery instructions in ABLE are correct.

·         Maintains serials title records in ABLE.

·         Packs, unpacks, performs quality assurance and shelf preparation for all shipments.

·         May select items for binding, in consultation with library staff.

·         As needed, assists in locating customer requests.

·         As needed, identifies missing periodical issues or limited retention titles and notifies appropriate library staff to initiate replacement or de-accession.

·         Handles all materials in a manner consistent with preservation policies and established library practices.

·         As needed, assists in responses to emergencies involving library materials.

·         Contributes to unit goals by accomplishing related duties as required including participation in team projects. Demonstrates open and honest communication, an attitude of respect and inclusion, and a positive approach in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Participates in the resolution of problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

·         This position involves regularly lifting and moving loads weighing in excess of 40 pounds

·         Job requires the ability to handle sharp tools, climb step stools and small ladders, and operate heavy equipment (power cutters, etc.)

·         Using appropriate safety measures, as tasks may involve exposure to dust and mold

·         Some tasks involve standing for extended periods and/or bending, walking, and sitting

·         Job requires ability in close vision

·         Routine use of photocopiers, scanners, and computers

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

·         Work is performed in a busy office environment 

·         The noise level is usually moderate

·         Exposure to dust and mold possible

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

·         High school diploma or equivalent required

·         Excellent communication skills required, both oral and written
 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

·         College degree preferred

·         Capacity to read and interpret documents such as bibliographic data, and familiarity with Alma and ABLE

·         Solid analytical and problem-solving skills 

·         Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and precision in a production setting

·         Ability to work collaboratively, initiate and adapt to change, and to be flexible

·         Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work productively in a team environment with minimal supervision

·         Ability to perform repetitive work tasks with overall accuracy, effectiveness, and attention to detail

·         Experience with MS Windows-based software preferred
